Ted Stevens’ Indictment

Sen. Ted Steven was indicted on August 29, 2008 on seven federal felony counts of failing to disclose on his annual financial statements more than $250,000 in gifts he received from Veco and its executive, Bill Allen. The indictment indicates Veco performed and paid for renovating Stevens’ Girdwood home, providing furnishings, property maintenance and a new generator.

Votes Against Veterans

Ted Stevens failed to ensure that our wounded soldiers receive the level of medical care they need and deserve. During the 109th Congress (2005 to 2006) alone, Ted Stevens voted to block efforts to provide more resources to veterans and for military health care five times.

War Profiteering

Members of Congress were outraged when it was revealed that sole-source contractor Halliburton overcharged the U.S. government by millions of dollars to import and sell gasoline in Iraq. Senator Stevens, however, has voted against establishing a commission to investigate waste, fraud and abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan four times.

As a leader on the Appropriations Committee from 1997 to 2005, Senator Stevens wielded great influence over military spending. An analysis of the 2005 appropriations cycle by Business Week, Stevens’ last year as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, demonstrated that 10 of the top 20 earmark recipients were clients of Robison, a lobbying firm that was also assisting Stevens with campaign assistance.
